The absolute best way to increase your pagerank on google and therefore your positioning when someone searches for you is to get links back to you. The higher the pagerank of the sites that link back to you, the better. And also, the more relevant these sites are to your content, the better.
This doesn't mean that it only takes links. You must have good content and keywords in the text on your page to actually come up on any results. But assuming you already have that, then it's all about increasing your pagerank.
